The Purpose of Work Placements

For the company
, hosting a student engineer provides access to additional skills.

For the student, placements in industry have become a vital part of training to be an engineer. Work placements allow students to gain their first experience of a working environment, a necessary step towards becoming quickly, and fully, operational in their new role.

During their course of study, students are required to complete 4 placements, representing a total of 13 months spent on assignment in a range of industries.

Student engineers undertake four work placements during their time at the School:

  • Year 1, manual work, February for 1 month

  • Year 2, technician, 3 months from early May

  • Year 3, engineer, 3 months from early May

  • Year 4, end of course project, 5 to 7 months from early February

Adequate preparation is made for all placements, notably in terms of health and safety.

Depending on the nature of the placement, every student enjoys the support of dedicated teacher-researcher acting as a placement tutor. The tutor is available during the placement to answer technical questions as well as tracking progress and evaluating performance.
The tutor is also the perfect contact for businesses seeking to forge links with one of the School's Research Centres.

After completing a placement, a company evaluation must be made and a report written; depending on the type of placement, students may also be asked to make a presentation to an examining board.

Each year more than 400 businesses offer placements to students from the Ecole des Mines.
